How to break up with a narcissist • The mistake

It is not entirely unusual for people to throw around the term “narcissist” in everyday speech. What you are actually referring to is a person with a narcissistic personality disorder, which can manifest itself in different ways – not least in a couple relationship.

– What it’s like to have a love relationship with a narcissist differs depending on how many narcissistic traits they have and which traits are involved, explains Monica Emanelllicensed psychologist and psychotherapist, for News24 and continues:

– Some narcissists deceive, lie about big things, lie and get so angry that you feel threatened, while others can inflate themselves and take care of themselves. But with the help of you as a partner setting limits and taking care of yourself, you may come to the conclusion that the benefits outweigh.

If, on the other hand, you want to break up with your partner and you suspect that he has a narcissistic personality disorder, Monica Emanell has slightly different advice, depending on how long you have been a couple.

– If you want to end a long-term relationship where children are involved, it may be good for you to go through what your life will look like. Go through mortgages, look at apartments, go through what your finances will look like, go through different types of reactions you think the person might have and go through in advance how you can respond to them, she says and continues:

– If you have a short-term relationship with a narcissist who dribbles back and forth with you and dries you between hope and despair, it might be a good idea to stop communicating. When the person then gets in touch, you can say that you don’t have time and that you can be heard at another time.

Ideally, one should avoid giving any longer explanations, says Emanell.

– Then there is a risk that the person will succeed in deceiving you, making you feel guilty and persuading you to stay.
