How the next Renault Scenic wants to save the planet

After the R5 and the 4L, it is another monument of its recent history that Renault has decided to bring up to date: the Scenic! Invited to speak at ChangeNow, “the global event of solutions for the planet”Luca De Meo, CEO of the diamond brand, took the opportunity to unveil the group’s new concept: Scenic Vision.
This presentation comes only a few months after the official announcement of the end of the marketing of the “vintage” Scenic.

A name from the past to speak of the future

The Scenic Vision concept is therefore not an extension of the minivan released in 1991 and renewed four times since. On the contrary, if Renault uses the name of its iconic family vehicle, it is to better mark the transition to the future.
In the words of the CEO of the diamond group, the future must be placed under the sign of the environment, safety and inclusion. So while this first glimpse of the Scenic Vision will indeed result in a commercial vehicle by 2024, it will also serve as the basis for longer-term work, up to 2030, which will be more focused on new energies and modernization. use of recyclable materials.
Ultimately, Renault plans to achieve carbon neutrality in 2040. The Scenic Vision is a significant first step in this direction.

A new engine, a new platform

Indeed, the vehicle is equipped with a hybrid, electric and hydrogen engine. The electric motor is located at the rear (propulsion), but it is backed up by a 2.5 kg hydrogen tank, placed at the front. It goes without saying that to achieve this result, Renault had to invest in a new development platform and proprietary technologies, as the fuel cell/electric motor mix was not yet sufficiently developed.
The battery part is, for its part, quite small since it is based on a 40 kWh accumulator and a 16 kW fuel cell. On the other hand, this choice would have a significant impact on the carbon footprint of the vehicle which would be, according to the figures of the manufacturer, lower by 75% compared to a classic electric car. As for autonomy, it would be around 800 km, according to the first official figures.

New concept, recycled materials

Inside, the Scenic Vision is just as surprising. Composed of 70% recycled materials, it contrasts with what is offered by the competition, both in terms of design and sensations to the touch.
The floor, for example, is a black and white mix made from recycled milk bottles and sewer pipes. The seats are made of polyester without any metal frame.
The atmosphere on board is cheerfully futuristic, even if many technological details such as the presence of USB-C ports or screens for monitoring the condition of the driver are reminiscent of current features.
Then, the French manufacturer is also innovating in terms of safety by replacing the classic airbag system with so-called cocoon airbags, which would protect more while being more compact and enveloping.
Finally, the rectangular “yoke” steering wheel, the many cameras on board or even the sound signature stamped Jean-Michel Jarre, are yet another declaration of Renault’s love for new technologies since the Renaulution conference, two years ago, which had marked this new credo.

Obviously, this new Scenic Vision will not be repeated identically in the commercial version, which will be released within two years. If the design, signed Gilles Vidal, should not move much since it is in the continuity of the new electric Mégane, the passenger compartment could on the other hand go down a little on Earth by marketing. However, the approach of a responsible, committed and technologically ambitious vehicle can only be welcomed.
