Charlotte Baris: In France, during 1832, nearly 100,000 people died from it during the few months that the epidemic lasted.
The situation is widely recounted by Jean Giono, in The Hussar on the roof, published in 1951. There was panic throughout the population. As the poor die more than the rich, some workers see this as a manipulation by the government to eliminate them, while the bourgeoisie fear the contagion of this infection of the people.
