How much alcohol can you bring into Sweden within the EU?

In order to bring alcohol with you from another country after a trip within the European Union (EU), you must meet certain requirements. The rules differ if you are traveling from a country outside the EU to Sweden, according to the Swedish Customs Administration.

You must be over 20 to bring alcohol to Sweden from another EU country.

You transport or carry the alcohol yourself, without the help of someone else.

The alcohol you bought with you is for you or your family’s personal use and no one else’s.

From 1 January 2004, the same tax-free import quantity applies to Swedes as to other EU citizens. If you meet the rules set by Customs then you may bring the following amount of alcohol with you, from another EU country, to Sweden:

  • 10 liters of spirits.
  • 90 liters of wine (of which 60 liters sparkling wine).
  • 20 liters of fortified wine.
  • 110 liters of beer.
  • You may bring alcohol from all three above-mentioned beverage categories. But the various amounts must not exceed the limit for each category. You can then, for example, bring two liters of strong wine, four liters of wine and 16 liters of strong beer.

If you were to bring more than the permitted limit, you are obliged to declare this to the Customs on arrival and pay both duty and tax for the drink that exceeds the limit.

Should you instead travel from a country that is not a member of the EU to Sweden, the following amount applies:

  • One liter of spirits or two liters of strong wine (including sparkling wine).
  • Four liters of wine.
  • 16 liters of strong beer.

How much alcohol can you bring into Sweden within the EU by air?

In Sweden it is The Swedish Transport Agency which is the responsible authority for aviation. According to them, if you fly to Sweden, you may bring the following amount of alcohol with you:

Alcoholic beverages of 24 to 70 percent by volume, which have been purchased after the security check, may be transported in hand luggage. You may then bring a maximum of five liters per person.

If you instead place the drink in your checked luggage, you may, if the packaging is unbroken, take with you the same quantity and percentage by volume.

As Germany is part of the EU, you can take with you 10 liters of spirits, 90 liters of wine of which 60 liters are sparkling, 20 liters of fortified wine and 110 liters of beer.

If, for example, you go to Germany to buy a larger quantity of alcohol than permitted, you must be able to show that the alcohol is for your personal use. It may then be required that you bring information and documents that prove that you intend to have the alcohol for, for example, a wedding or another large party.

However, it is important to remember that the alcohol may only be for personal use, and if the Swedish Customs Service deems it different, they can confiscate the drink. There may also be suspicions of possible tax fraud or smuggling, and then an investigation may be initiated and you may be convicted of a crime, writes the Swedish Customs Administration on its homepage.
