How Many New Game of Thrones Projects Are Coming

George RR Martin has confirmed that seven new spinoff projects are in development in the Game of Thrones universe.

House of the Dragon’s second season is coming to an end, and fans of the Game of Thrones spinoff are already looking forward to more. While a third season is bound to come to HBO, author George R. R. Martin has confirmed that seven more spin-off series are in development. It’s hard to imagine all seven of these ideas ever coming to fruition, especially considering that series in this universe have been scrapped before. But it looks like it’s going to be a long time before Westeros disappears from our television screens.

Speaking at Oxford Writers’ House, Martin gave some insight into the next Game of Thrones spinoff, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight. The writer also revealed that there are currently seven more series in development, three animated and four live-action. While the plots for these series have not yet been confirmed, it seems likely that a live-action series about Aegon the Conqueror will be forthcoming.

A series about Kit Harington’s Jon Snow was reportedly in development for 2022, but the actor confirmed earlier this year that the series appeared to be dead. “I hadn’t really talked about it at all, because it was in development,” Harington told Screen Rant. “I didn’t want it to leak out that it was in development, and I didn’t want it to be something where people start theorizing, get excited, or hate the idea when it might never happen. Because in the development process, you look at it from every angle and see if it’s worth it.” The project is now off the table, Harington added. “It’s off the table right now because we couldn’t find the right story that we were all excited about. So we decided to put the tools aside for now. There may be a time in the future when we come back to it, but right now, no. It’s on the shelf.”

While the Jon Snow series is likely not moving forward, Martin recently revealed that the canceled prequel Ten Thousand Ships is in development at HBO. Martin congratulated playwright Eboni Booth on winning the Pulitzer Prize for her play Primary Truth , revealing that Booth is working with HBO to expand the Game of Thrones universe. “I can’t explain why Ben Franklin is on the medal instead of Joseph Pulitzer, since I’ve never won a Pulitzer, but Eboni promised to let me know after the ceremony. She’s an incredibly talented young playwright and a joy to work with, and when she’s not writing and producing her award-winning plays on and off Broadway, she’s kept busy by me and HBO, working on a new pilot for TEN THOUSAND SHIPS, a GAME OF THRONES spinoff about Nymeria and the Rhoynar. We’re all very excited about it… although we’re still trying to figure out how to pay for ten thousand ships, three hundred dragons, and those giant turtles,” Martin wrote on his blog.
