Nieuwegein is still growing. In 2017, the municipality thought it would be able to build 3,500 houses until the year 2030. Later, that ambition increased to 5,000 and construction sites have now been designated for just under 9,000 new homes. The provisional construction freeze applies to more than 3,000 houses, from social rental to purchase, for which there is no project developer yet.
This includes all kinds of homes, from social rent to sale. According to the Woonvisie in Nieuwegein, construction should mainly be for starters, so-called ‘risers’, the elderly and people who need care. There are relatively many single-family homes in Nieuwegein. It is expected that in the coming years there will be a particular need for apartments.
