Choosing the first name of their child is a question that every parent has necessarily asked themselves at some point. But fewer people wonder how this choice is influenced. Cinema, music, nature or significant event: what are the elements that lead to choosing a first name?
Choosing a first name for a child is not easy and very often different criteria come into play to select it. But consciously or not, other factors influence our choices. Photobox has analyzed the favorite first names of the French since 2000, in order to measure how much they may have been influenced by cinema, culture or nature.
Names from movies or series
According to Photobox’s analysis, unsurprisingly, these are the first names of characters from films or series that were most frequently given to children born in 2000 and 2021. In total, according to this study, these are not less than 379,276 babies who were named after a movie or television character, over this period.
The first given names are in order: Lucas, first followed by Nathan for the characters in the Scott Brothers series followed by Anna, the first name of the heroine of the Snow Queen.
Personalities, a source of inspiration for first names too
Beyond the world of cinema, the musical world always inspires parents to name their cherubs. Thus, Adèle, Justin and Abel are the three most given first names between 2000 and 2020 in reference to singer Adele, singer Justin Bieber and star The Weeknd, whose real first name is Abel.
The influence of nature to name babies
Some parents prefer to avoid these fads and prefer to turn to nature to find a first name. Thus the first names of flowers have a certain success, especially among little girls. We find in order: Rose, Yasmine and Capucine.
But the boys are not left out, since in fourth position is found the first name Lilian. For first names in reference to nature, the top 3 are made up of the first names Alban, Ilona and Flavie.
