What Was How I Met Your Mother’s Sex Problem?

In fact, Father is set in the same world as Mother. In addition, the spin-off uses the same narrative technique as its big role model. In How I Met Your Mother, Ted (Josh Radnor) looks back to his teenage kids about how he met their mother. Very detailed of course he left out no detail. For real absolutely no Detail! The kids find out exactly what their father did in his youth and in his life as a young adult in New York – and above all with whom.

Well, maybe Ted Mosby is a sex-positive father, who has no problem telling his approximately 13-year-old offspring about a threesome with two women. Or from them already problematic pick-up techniques to rant about his (second) best friend Barney Stinson (Neil Patrick Harris). It was at least disconcerting during the original broadcast how open Ted was about his sex life to his children. Articles like this show that. And this one . And memes like this:

How How I Met Your Father deals with his characters’ sex

Spoilers for How I Met Your Father: In the new series, Sex and the City star Kim Cattrall, as the older version of Sophie, tells her son how she met his father. She is in the year 2050 and speaks to him on a speakerphone in the living room.

Right in the first scene, the authors avoid the sex irritation of the original with three simple tricks:

  • The son is obvious significantly older than Ted’s children. He doesn’t live at home anymore and his voice is quite deep.
  • Kim Cattrall drinks White winewhile telling the stories. She is visibly tipsy, her tongue loosened. In such a mood, heartier topics sometimes come up on the table. We all know that (unfortunately).
  • Sophie warns her son. According to her own statements, she has “just enough [Wein intus]to include the sexy bits.” The young man is noticeably uncomfortable. But he accepts his fate. The right conversation situation is established.
  • By the way, there isn’t really much sex in the first episode. Sophie just goes on a date and is involuntarily exposed to a strange man’s genitals in her best friend’s apartment. Maybe it will be even more frivolous in the future. In any case, the framework for it is there.
