What companions are there? So far there are a total of 10 companions in Baldur’s Gate 3 that you can recruit and romance with. The following are known:
All companions have their location and can only be found and recruited at these points. We have given you the locations on the map with the respective numbering of our list:
However, it is not enough just to visit the site. There are a few things you need to keep in mind to welcome your potential companions to your squad. We will now show you what you have to do for each individual player so that they can join you.

Lae’zel
How do I unlock them? To find Lae’zel, head north of the Roadside Cliffs waypoint. Eventually you reach two tieflings who are discussing what to do with the imprisoned Lae’zel.
To free them, you’ll need a bow to hit the bottom of the cage, but before you do that, you’ll want to get rid of the tieflings. Lies to them and tells them how dangerous Lae’zel is and advises them to leave. An arch is conveniently located nearby.
A tip for your trip: Talk to the Tieflings and report that you are wounded and are looking for a camp nearby. The tieflings will then give you a place to rest.
shadow heart
How do I unlock them? Shadowheart can be encountered and recruited in many situations. However, the easiest way is to free them in the Mindflayer’s Nautiloid. So to get her out of her prison, you need to find a rune in a nearby room and use it to free her.
If you have achieved that, you can find them near the beach where you are. Now wake her up and don’t touch her artifact in order not to lose her trust.
If you haven’t freed them, they can be found near the Abandoned Chapel in the Overgrown Ruins waypoint. You can recruit them there if you missed your chance before.
Gael
How do I unlock him? Near the crash site of the nautiloid you will find a purple glowing sigil. This is a waypoint that is not working properly. Interact with the seal to see a human arm sticking out. It’s Gale’s arm.
In order to gain him as a companion, you must pull him from the portal at all costs. You can choose to use brute force or your magic to rescue this companion. Once you’ve made it, Gale can be recruited and a new waypoint, the “Roadside Cliffs” can be used.
Caution! If you play as Dark Desire you may not be able to recruit Gale!
Wyll
How do I unlock him? To find Wyll, you must make your way to the Emerald Grove. Once there, you follow the further events until Wyll appears in person. After your encounter, you can find Wyll northwest of the Emerald Grove, chat with him, and then recruit him.
Astarion
How do I unlock him? Astarion can be found southwest of the Nautiloid wreckage. He wanders around near the cliffs. If you speak to him, he will tell you how he cornered one of the Mindflayers – all you have to do is kill him. This is a trap.
Astarion will hold a knife to your throat and you can have a conversation together. As you talk about what’s happening, you’ll have the opportunity to recruit him as a companion.
Karlach
How do I unlock them? Karlach can be found west of the Emerald Grove. If you already have Wyll with you as your companion, you can ask him where she was found. He is also looking for her and will give you a tip. You know you’re on the right track when you get involved in battles with gnolls.
Halsin
How do I unlock him? In order to recruit Halsin as a companion, you must make your way to the goblin camp. This is west of the Emerald Grove. Once there, you need to go to the Ruined Sanctuary and head northeast.
You then find a way to free him, but beware, the goblins don’t approve of you. They will attack you, but Halsin will help you fight. After you make it out, he can be your companion if you want it.
Minthara
How do I unlock them? You can recruit Minthara if you fight on the side of the goblins when it comes to the Emerald Grove quest line. Follow the quest and betray the druids.
