How an ancient helmet that was actually partly from Woerden

Determining how much the helmet is worth turns out to be quite difficult. The object has therefore been appraised several times, explains Arja van Veldhuizen. She is director of the City Museum in Woerden, where the helmet has been on display since 2014. “It is very difficult to determine the value of such a helmet. If you have comparable finds, so another Rembrandt for example, you can easily compare the value with a similar painting. But this helmet is a very rare find. Only in Leiden there is a similar copy and in Frankfurt am Main, in Germany. It has cheek flaps and we suspect that this helmet has too. So when we had the helmet appraised, it said 50,000 euros, but also 280,000 euros. So it varies quite a bit.”
