How AFP intends to safeguard and enhance its photo archives

A book, an exhibition, an auction: Agence France-Presse has begun a judicious work of showcasing its photographic heritage. To talk about it, The media workshop receives Marielle Eudes, director of special photo projects at AFP.

The oldest news agency in the world, AFP has an archive of 6 million silver photos. This fall, the agency is honoring this precious heritage in several ways:

  • the beautiful book AFP, a photo epic – A sensitive diary of history through 120 years of archives brings together 300 silver black and white photos.
  • I’exposure “From Silver to Iconic” presents 200 images at the Ellia Art Gallery, in the Marais district, in Paris, from October 26 to November 5
  • a auction of these exhibited images and 3 NFTs – a first – must take place on November 5, 2022 from 2 p.m. in this same gallery

The media workshop discuss it with Marielle Eudes, director of special photo projects at AFP – and former director of photography at the agency. In this interview, our guest explains the agency’s approach to this work. The idea is to show that AFP, a news agency, also has “ photographic authors “. If the selection includes photos related to major current events, it also contains shots of everyday life. So that ” this photo-by-photo exhibit is a time capsule puzzle that draws this sensitive diary of history », explains Marielle Eudes. ” Over time, the images take on poetry, the look changes. »

Marielle Eudes explains that she made “ core drilling in the archives to choose those photos that are exhibited. It tells about the work of restoring the images, carried out by a specialized service within the agency, which can take one hour to several days, with the imperative of respecting the work of the photographer. She returns to the thorny question of the management of image rights.

The funds collected by the auction will make it possible to support the photographic collection of AFP. Film photography is now a thing of the past, since since 1998, “all of the boxes of the agency’s 450 photographers around the world have been digital”, says Marielle Eudes.
