How a dog bite on the NCIS set sparked the

Navy CIS without Gibbs and Abby was unimaginable for a long time. Then came 2016 and a shocking incident on the show’s set that changed everything. We explain how the dramatic rift between Pauley Perrette and Mark Harmon came about.

Summary: What happened on the set of NCIS?

  • Mark Harmon’s dog reportedly bit a crew member
  • He is said to have brought the animal to the set
  • The crew felt uncomfortable with the dog
  • Pauley Perrette reportedly confronted Mark Harmon
  • This sparked tensions between Harmon and Perrette
  • …which led to Perrette’s exit
  • How did the dog bite on the NCIS set happen?

In 2016, TMZ first reported that Mark Harmon’s dog allegedly attacked a crew member on the set of NCIS. It was a three-year-old pit bull mix that Mark Harmon adopted as a pup. So far everything was normal: The NCIS set was considered dog-friendly, several crew members would have brought their dogs to work.

The team got along well with the animal. On the day of the attack, a member is said to have fought with the dog, as is so often the case. Suddenly the playmate felt threatened – and bit the person. The wound was sewn up with 16 stitches. The story could have ended here.

Perrette and Harmon argument: What happened after the dog bite?

Over a year later, The Wrap reported on dramatic developments that led to a deep rift within the NCIS crew following the dog bite:

  • The Wrap suggests in the report that this was not the first time Mark’s dog had bitten Harmon, so as the owner it was his responsibility to protect other people from the dog
  • However, Mark Harmon continued to take the dog to the set even after the attack
  • He placed the animal in his trailer and kept it on a leash
  • The crew had no longer come into contact with the dog
  • Several people on the set would have felt uncomfortable around the animal
  • The power constellation on the set complicated the situation: As well as being a lead actor, Mark Harmon was also a producer on the series, making him one of the most influential people on the set. The only crew member brave enough to confront Harmon about the general concerns was Pauley Perrette.

After that, things took their course: A year after the dog incident, Pauley Perrette announced her departure from the series – not because of an argument, as she said at the time. But tweets published by Perrette as of 2018 suggest that a heated argument must have broken out between her Mark Harmon. The actress accused her colleague, some seriously, and stated that Fear” to have in front of him.

Both stars have since left the series after years of forming the NCIS centerpiece – with Gibbs as Abby’s fatherly friend. That had nothing to do with the reality on the set. Perrette and Harmon reportedly filmed the last NCIS episodes together separately. A bitter end for the dream duo.
