A stairwell in Linköping exploded last night and destroyed several apartments.
A mother was woken up by someone breaking into the multi-family building and immediately called 112.
– I have the police on the phone and then it rings, she says.
Several apartments and glass panes at the address are damaged after last night’s explosion in the Johannelund district just before 01:00.
The address has been under police surveillance for some time and cameras have been set up in the area.
A woman who lives in the apartment building was sleeping with her family when she suddenly heard noises from the stairwell.
– I woke up from it. Like someone broke in. So me and my partner call the police and because we know there are surveillance cameras for a reason. And we go into the children’s room, says the mother who wishes to remain anonymous.
While she is talking to the 112 operator, the explosive device detonated.
– We locked ourselves in the room that was furthest away. With the children. We have two rabbits so we gathered them together and closed the door because smoke was coming into our apartment. We locked ourselves in there and waited, she says.
What did your kids say?
– They talk a lot about it. My daughter said it was the worst night ever. They understand but still don’t. We talk about it a lot and try to let them vent.
“It’s terrible, terribly serious”
Joakim Johansson lives in the area and was woken up by the strong pressure wave and is also appalled by the act which affects completely outsiders.
– I think it’s terrible. And think it should be classified, more or less, as a terrorist crime and not as gang crime as I think it will be labeled as, he says.
– I think it’s terrible, terribly serious.
Do you feel safe in Linköping?
– For my part, I feel safe, but I don’t want my children to be outside when it’s dark. And then they are still adults. I probably think more about them than about myself, says Joakim Johansson.
A 35-year-old man has since been arrested at 06:04 on Thursday morning on suspicion of attempted murder after the bombing.
