The household hazardous waste mobile depot will be hosted from 9:30 am to 2 pm by Lambton County and Clean Harbors Canada at the county’s public works depot at 6958 Townsend Line.

“Corrosive, toxic, reactive and flammable materials will be collected at the mobile depot,” Matt Deline, the county’s public works manager, said in a news release.

“These items should never be placed in a regular landfill because they have the potential to injure sanitation workers and the potential to damage our environment,” Deline said.

Examples of items accepted at the mobile depot include batteries, drain and oven cleaners, pesticides, rat poison, cleaning fluids, pharmaceuticals, pool chemicals, ammonia, bleach, aerosols, gasoline, paint, barbecue starter, oils, solvents and propane cylinders.

Also accepted are sharps (hypodermic needles) and fluorescent lightbulbs, the county said.

Not accepted are PCBs, commercial, industrial, agricultural or radioactive wastes, tires, explosives (flares and ammunition), electronics, asbestos and any containers weighing more than 25kg (55lb).

Those attending the depot are being asked, for safety reasons, to separate lithium batteries from all other battery types prior to dropping them off.

The county also hosts regular household hazardous waste collection events at the Clean Harbors Canada site, 4090 Telfer Road, in St. Clair Township in March, April, May, June, September, and October.

The next is scheduled for Oct. 26, 9 am to 2 pm

The service is funded by Lambton County and available at no charge to all county residents.
