In an interview with House of the Dragon screenwriter Sara Hess, American outlet Variety asked her if the show’s creative team had already written their version of the Blood and Cheese characters. Without any spoilers, these are two secondary characters from Fire and Blood (George RR Martin, 2018) with a major role in the Dance of the Dragons. The screenwriter replied tersely, “We’re writing the Season 2 finale right now. I think you won’t be disappointed.” Something to put fans in suspense during the long wait before the release of season 2.

The house of the dragon season 2 release date is not yet known. However, we know that the filming of the highly anticipated sequel to the series should start in early 2023, as confirmed by Ryan Condal, co-creator of the series, to the American site. variety. The showrunner did not venture to mention a release date the same year. However, it’s a safe bet that, given the constraints associated with the production of such an imposing series, season 2 will not arrive on our screens before 2024.

About the filming of House of the Dragon season 2, little information has filtered for the moment. Ryan Condal has only confirmed that it will start in early 2023. That gives a vague indication of its air date. Indeed, it is hard to imagine that season 2 could be ready to broadcast by the end of 2023. Asked about this by Variety, the showrunner did not give a definitive answer on this subject: “it’s still to be determined”, for the co-creator.

Note that, unlike season 1, Miguel Sapochnik will not be co-showrunner in the same way as Ryan Condal. The director-producer indeed announced shortly after the launch of House of the Dragon in August 2022 that he was leaving his post from season 2 of which he will however still be executive producer. According to the American media Puck, disputes would have arisen between Sapochnik and HBO after the chain refused to offer another position as executive producer for Alexis Raben, wife of Miguel Sapochnik. This could explain the departure of the director of episodes 1 and 7 of House of the Dragon season 1.

As to House of the Dragon season 2 castmost of the actors seen during the first season will sign their return in the sequel apart from the actors replaced after episode 5 and the actors whose characters died during season 1. We also note that George RR Martin and Ryan Condal both announced the upcoming arrival of Daeron Targaryen, the fourth child of Alicent and Viserys who we didn’t get to see in Season 1. “When it makes sense to mention it – and it will happen – it will be mentioned” promises Condal.

Apart from the last two seasons, Game of Thrones has always offered ten-episode seasons since its launch in 2011. House of the Dragon follows the example of the original series and replicates this same rhythm. Season 1 of House of the Dragon therefore has 10 episodes.

What to know before watching House of the Dragon

George RR Martin’s universe is as exciting as it is dense. For neophytes as well as for fans who have not read the books, it is not always easy to immerse yourself in a new series in Westeros. To help you make the most of your House of the Dragon viewing, here’s a recap of information you may find useful before watching the new series set in the Game of Thrones universe.

  • House of the Dragon is a Game of Thrones prequel. The series is set between 200 and 170 years before the events that occur in the first series. It is therefore not necessarily necessary to have seen all eight seasons to watch House of the Dragon.
  • The House of the Dragon series adapts a piece from the book Fire and Blood by George RR Martin released in 2018. In this book, Martin writes a historical chronicle dedicated to the Targaryen dynasty.
  • House of the Dragon focuses on the period known as the “Dance of the Dragons”, a period of turmoil in Westeros where the Kingdom is split into two camps that support the accession to the throne of two different heirs. At the time, it is Viserys Targaryen first who is on the throne of Westeros. He has no male heir from his first wife but a daughter named Rhaenyra who could succeed him. However, he obtains sons from his second marriage, which disturbs the order of succession and creates the seeds of dissension.
  • At the time when House of the Dragon takes place, dragons are alive and well and numerous in Westeros unlike at the beginning of Game of Thrones. Only people of Targaryen blood are able to overpower and ride them. These winged creatures are capable of breathing fire and have been used many times in warfare, which also explains why Targaryen rule is no longer challenged at this point.
  • The series covers a period of approximately thirty years. For this, she resorts to regular time jumps and has also recruited several actors to play the same characters at different ages in their lives. From episode 1 to 5, Milly Alcock and Emily Carey play Rhaenyra Targaryen and Alicent Hightower. From episode 6, Emma D’Arcy and Olivia Cooke take over these roles.
  • There are many main characters to remember in House of the Dragon. Here is a brief recap before the start of the season. Viserys Targaryen I (Paddy Considine) is the current King in Westeros. Without a clear successor, he seeks to impose his eldest daughter Rhaenyra as the legitimate heiress. Rhaenyra Targaryen (Milly Alcock) is the King’s eldest daughter and plans to succeed him. She rides the dragon Syrax and is a friend of the young Alicent Hightower, daughter of Otto Hightower who exercises the role of Hand of the King (first adviser to the King, the Hand can also endorse his authority. He is the second most powerful man of the Kingdom).
