House of the Dragon shows 17 (!) dragons – and this is what the biggest of the fantasy highlights looks like

House of the Dragon shows 17 dragons – and

Comic-Con in San Diego this weekend also featured a panel on House of the Dragon, the new series from the Game of Thrones universe. A lot was revealed about the winged beasts in the fantasy series, and a new Extended Comic-Con trailer was released, which unfortunately shows little that is new compared to the first trailer.

Before we go to the Dragon News come, you can see the trailer for yourself here:

The 17 dragons in House of the Dragon will be very different from those in GOT

It has been known for some time that the prequel to Game of Thrones will feature a total of 17 dragons, a multiple of the dragons from the original series. At the pop culture convention, showrunner Ryan J. Condal explained how the dragons will differ from Drogon, Rhaegal and Viserion:

There are 17 of them at the climax of the story. So it was important to make them different not only in their appearance and demeanor, but also in the way they bond with their riders.

Every dragon, according to Condal’s Den of Geek, reflects in some way the behavior of the rider.

Not the biggest, but the worst tempered: Caraxes

So be caraxesthe dragon of Daemon (Matt Smith), like the Targ Prince “quarrelsome” and “restless”, even if he lets himself be petted like a dear kitten in the trailer. Matt Smith is completely unbiased: “Caraxes is the best dragon. He is the prettiest“.

Towards the end of the trailer we see her curiously looking into the camera Syraxthe slightly smaller and brighter dragon of Rhaenyra Targaryen (Emma D’Arcy/Milly Alcock):

Two dragon giants are hiding in the trailer

Of the largest living dragon in House of the Dragon is probably also visible, but you have to look closely for that. It is about Vhagar, which Condal in San Diego as “Colossus” described. Vhagar was already alive when Aegon the Conqueror set out with his Targaryen sisters to conquer Westeros. House of the Dragon is set 120 to 130 years later, and in last week’s two trailers we’ll probably see Vhagar finding her new rider.

The two shots are extremely dark, but they show a boy of similar age and looks young Aemond Targaryen might be who looks up at a dragon:

The young and the older Aemond Targaryen

He is the second son of King Viserys’ second marriage and one of the most famous characters from the Dance of the Dragons, the Targ Civil War that the series will narrate. Whose side he will be on is not revealed at this point.

In the stories by George RR Martin, Aemond is 10 years old when Vhagar becomes his dragon. So if the boy is Aemond, this dragon is likely to be Vhagar:

The greatest dragon of all time can also be found in the House of the Dragon trailer

Vhagar is the largest living dragon, yet the largest dragon in the history of the fantasy world we also see in the Extended Trailer – at least what’s left of him.

It is a matter of Balerion, the Black Terror. Aegon the Conqueror once rode him to Westeros. In old age he became the dragon of King Viserys. After the beast’s death, its skull was laid out in the Red Keep at King’s Landing. This scene in the Extended Trailer should show Viserys and his daughter Rhaenyra looking at the huge skull.

Balerion’s skull in House of the Dragon

This isn’t the Black Terror’s first appearance. In Game of Thrones season 7, Qyburn tried his ballista on the greatest of all dragons and pierced the skull while Cersei watched contentedly.

To all appearances Balerion was enlarged for the new series, to continue to appear more intimidating than Vhagar and Co.
