House of the Dragon Season 2: The mysterious visions in the finale explained – with and without future spoilers

House of the Dragon Season 2 The mysterious visions in

The finale of House of the Dragon Season 2 offers unexpected insights into the possible continuation of the Dragon Dance – and the series itself. Daemon (Matt Smith) looks through a weirwood vision into a potential future and Helaena (Phia Saban) prophesies a character’s impending death.

Four important insights about the future are hidden in the finale of season 2. Below you will find an explanation of the two gruesome prophecies. But should we take them seriously at all? We will tell you further down in the spoiler section with a look at the course of the dragon dance in George RR Martin’s book Fire and Blood.

Here begins the spoiler-free explanation

Helaena’s Prophecy in House of the Dragon Season 2: What is the God’s Eye?

The fact that Helaena Targaryen may have prophetic dragon dreams and may even be a rare greenseer was already hinted at in the first season. While she often spoke in riddles before, in episode 8 she now bluntly reveals to her brother Aemond (Ewan Mitchell) what the future might hold for him:

HBO

Does Helaena Targaryen see the future?

Aegon will be king again. He still has his victory ahead of him. He sits on a wooden throne. And you, you will be dead. You will be swallowed by the Eye of the Gods and will never be seen again.

Whether Helaena simply wants to scare her brother or whether she actually foresaw Aemond’s death in a dream is not yet answered by House of the Dragon in Season 2. But what is this god’s eyethat she is talking about? It is a specific place.

God’s Eye is the name of a lake known in the world of Westeros. It is located in the Riverlands right next to the (cursed) castle of Harrenhal, where Daemon Targaryen (Matt Smith) recently assembled an army. Could Aemond possibly drown in this lake, i.e. be swallowed by it?

Daemon Targaryen sees spoilers for Game of Thrones – but also for his own story?

Daemon Targaryen (Matt Smith) also gets some surprising future prospects in the season 2 finale. Vision at the Weirwood Tree of Harrenhal reveals not only his own possible fate, but also events that only take place around 200 years later in Game of Thrones. Among others, we see:

  • Daemon’s great-grandson Brynden Stream, who becomes the three-eyed raven
  • Daemon’s descendant Daenerys Targaryen and her three baby dragons Viserion, Rhaegal and Drogon
  • White Walkers as the ultimate threat
  • While Game of Thrones fans are less surprised by these views of A Song of Ice and Fire, Daemon’s vision also contains three completely new findings which promise a dark turn for his story.

    HBO

    No happy ending for Caraxes

  • Daemon drowns
  • His dragon Caraxes lies dead on a battlefield
  • Rhaenyra sits on the Iron Throne
  • Whether this vision comes true or not: The knowledge of the future of Westeros is already causing Daemon to put his own ambitions aside and put all his trust in his queen Rhaenyra. How the knowledge of his own possible death affects Aemond’s actions, however, we will probably only find out in season 3.

But what is really true about the death prophecies? If you already want to know what George RR Martin’s book reveals about the truthfulness of the visions, you will find a short explanation below as to whether the events hinted at could actually occur.

Did House of the Dragon Season 2 just spoil the rest of the series?

Many fans of House of the Dragon try to avoid spoilers week after week so that they can watch the latest episodes of the fantasy series with an open mind. But the series itself has now delivered a surprising spoiler preview in the finale of season 2. The predicted future events actually take place in the original and could therefore have already revealed important events of the next two seasons.

Rhaenrya’s accession to the throne is a huge event that we will probably see in House of the Dragon Season 3. But Daemon’s vision goes a step further and tells him (and us) that End of his own storywhich is directly related to Aemond’s fate. If the series sticks to the events of the original, we could expect the following duel in season 4:

    HBO

House of the Dragon teases the duel over the Gods Eye

In Fire and Blood, later in the war, an epic dragon duel takes place over Lake Harrenhal between Aemond and Daemon. Together with their dragons Vhagar and Caraxes, they fall to their deaths in the depths of the Gods’ Eye. In the original, however, there are speculations that Rhaenyra’s prince consort may have survived.

Helaena’s prophecy contains another major spoiler, which, however, may only come true towards the end of the fantasy series. Although Aegon (Tom Glynn-Carney) is escorted out of King’s Landing in the season 2 finale and Rhaenyra is about to take power, Helaena hints that the Black Queen’s reign will not last long.

Because: Shortly before the end of the Targaryen Civil War, Aegon II celebrates a victorious return and will temporarily rule as king again. Due to his severe injuries, however, he is unable to sit on the Iron Throne. Instead, he will rule from a padded wooden chair, as Helaena has already predicted.

Whether House of the Dragon has just revealed really hard-hitting spoilers for the next two seasons is just speculation at this point. There is still the possibility that the fantasy series will take a completely different direction than the original. And it wouldn’t be the first time.
