House of the Dragon creator defends controversial season 2 finale

“Did I just see a 70-minute trailer for season 3?” or “I hope you have an appetite on nothing at all!” The reactions of the fans to the finale of House of the Dragon Season 2, which reached us in the night from last Sunday to Monday, were mixed. The big season finale was mainly criticized for not really feeling like a, well, big season finale for many and instead just sowing more seeds for future events ‒ like the hotly anticipated Battle of the throat
‒ was sown.

Now showrunner Ryan Condal commented on the season 2 finale and explained the decision to move the big battle to later seasons.

“Nobody has infinite time and resources”: House of the Dragon showrunner defends season 2 finale

During a press conference for the season 2 finale, Ryan Condal was asked by host Joanna Robinson (via IGN ) why the Battle of the Throat didn’t make it into this season. Condal then explained that he and his team simply didn’t have the resources to realize the battle. In addition, he wondered how the story could be continued in the next two seasons:

One of the challenges of making television of this magnitude is that there is an infinite amount of time and resources. They never exist. Nobody has infinite time and resources. As a showrunner, you always have to keep the balance between the story and the resources available to tell it. And you also have to think about what the goal of the show is and where we are going. It was a combination of factors that led to us having to re-divide the story, because we knew where the journey was going and where the end point was. We re-divided the story to [nach Staffel 1] to create three more great seasons.

“We wanted to satisfy fans”: Ryan Condal makes promises for season 3

At the same time, Condal assured that fans will definitely see the battle in the throat – and soon. To do this, he wants to gather all possible resources to satisfy the fans’ expectations:

[Die Schlacht in der Gurgel] will happen very soonwhen we look at the storytelling of House of the Dragon. And it will be the biggest thing we’ve ever done, as far as we know. We wanted to take the time and space to make it happen at a level that will delight and satisfy the fans as much as it [das Ereignis] deserved. We also wanted to build some anticipation in that regard.

Ryan Condal can be sure that the fans’ expectations are certainly high. But it may take another two long years before they are measured against reality. Since production of the third season is scheduled to begin in early 2025, the new episodes will not start until in 2026 probably.
