Below, discover the recap of episode 3 of season 2. Please note, the rest of the article contains spoilers.

Daemon Takes Harrenhal

Episode 3 of season 2 of House of the Dragon opens with a massacre between two enemy houses, the Brackens and the Blackwoods, vassals of Lord Tully who have each sworn allegiance to one of the two enemy clans. At the same time, we find Daemon who left Dragonstone after his argument with Rhaenyra. Prince Targaryen traveled to Harrenhaal Castle, owned by the Strong family and the largest castle in Westeros. Ser Simon Strong immediately surrenders and bequeaths him the ruined castle. Daemon intends to use it as a base for attack on the Conflans. But he suffers from hallucinations during his stay, notably seeing young Rhaenyra (Millie Alcock returning in the role) sewing young Jaehaerys’ head back together. Could the castle be haunted?

The Greens counterattack

During episode 3 of the new season of House of the Dragon, the Hightower clan counterattacks after the failure of Sir Arryk’s assault. Sir Criston Cole also leaves for Harrenhaal Castle with Gwayne Hightower, Alicent’s brother, to take the building and subdue the Conflans. But on the way, the soldiers come across Baela Targaryen and her dragon. She tries to chase them, but they manage to take refuge in the forest at the last minute before being attacked.

At the same time, viewers can discover the existence of a new character who claims to be the bastard son of Baelon and half-brother of Viserys and Daemon. He is notably discreet when he meets King Aegon in a tavern. It is difficult to know if he is telling the truth since we do not know of a half-brother for Viserys and Daemon in the Targaryen genealogy.

Decisive confrontation between Alicent and Rhaenyra

Rhaenys warns Rhaenyra of the current escalation between the Hightowers and her clan and advises her to stop the war while there is still time. After sending Rhaena (Daemond’s daughter) to safety to care for her younger sons (Viserys, Aegon, and Joffrey) and dragon eggs to ensure the future of her dynasty, she takes a decisive step: provoke a discussion with Alicent in the hopes of finding common ground before it is too late.

With the help of Mysaria, Rhaenyra travels to King’s Landing disguised as a nun and causes a surprise encounter with Alicent in the church. The two former friends finally discuss their points of difference, and in particular the deaths of Lucherys and Jaehaerys. When Alicent assures her that Viserys asked with his last breath that his son Aegon ascend to the throne, Rhaenyra understands that he was actually talking about the prophecy “Song of Ice and Fire”, and that he was not talking about Aegon but of the ancient monarch, Aegon the Conqueror. Rhaenyra then demands the throne that is rightfully hers and an end to the war before it begins. But despite her doubts, Alicent refuses to hear the truth and cuts the conversation short. The final attempt to achieve peace has definitely failed.
