Fraud is not a new phenomenon, but recent reporting shows that cases are increasing.

In 2023 alone, the number of frauds increased by 21.9 percent, according to data from the police.

New rules to combat fraud

Some who have acted against this are the Swedish Post and Telecommunications Board (PTS). They want to reduce the risk of phone scams where the fraudster calls their victims and manages to extort money during the call.

– Telephone scams are a serious social problem. We expect the rules to have a big impact and lead to even more scam calls being blocked, said Jesper Simonshead of the numbering and addressing unit, in a press release.

1 in 10 hotel guests are exposed: “Worrying”

However, several different types of fraud remain, such as card fraud, phishing and invoice fraud.

One group has proven to be particularly vulnerable to payment fraud, and that group is hotel guests. This is shown by a study from the fintech platform Adyen.

The survey shows that as much as 1 in 10 Swedish hotel guests are exposed to fraud. Men in particular are vulnerable, as 11 percent of men state that they have been exposed in comparison to women, where the same figure is five percent.

“The results are alarming and show that the hotel industry needs to modernize its procedures and systems for payments”, writes Tobias LindhCEO Adyen Nordics & Baltics, in a press release.

Got rid of over 12,000 kroner

Of the hotel visitors who took part in the survey, they stated that the fraud occurred when they booked a hotel or during their stay at the hotel.

The average loss from these frauds was measured by Adyen at SEK 5,824. One in twenty of those affected state that they got rid of a sum that corresponds to more than SEK 12,000.

Lindh at Adyen thinks the numbers are worrying.

“The industry needs to invest in both customer experience and security,” he writes the press release.
