Hospitals are shelled in Khartoum – and forced to close

Khartoum University Hospital’s wards have been filled with injured people in just a few days. The supplies were quickly depleted after doctors, patients and their relatives were trapped in the hospital for several days due to the violence that has rocked the neighborhood and Sudan since Saturday.

On Monday morning, one of the university hospital’s wards was heavily damaged by shelling.

— We have run out of everything. We work with the smallest possible resources. We are all exhausted, but there is a shortage of doctors, says doctor Amin Saad.

Not long after, the hospital was forced to close completely – still full of people unable to get out.

It is just one of at least six hospitals closed either because they have been damaged by shelling, are inaccessible because of the fighting or are struggling with water or power cuts. There are around 20 hospitals in the capital and neighboring Omdurman.

— The situation is extremely difficult, says another doctor.
