Karolinska University Hospital’s hospital director Björn Zoëga leaves his post.

– I have been here for almost five years now and have walked with the hospital and its fantastic staff through incredible times with incredible challenges, Zoëga tells TT.

– Now I have done what I set out to do.

Zoëga took up her position in the spring of 2019, shortly after the inauguration of Nya Karolinska, a building that has been criticized, among other things, for rampant costs. The hospital had also recently been rocked by the Macchiarini scandal, in which visiting professor Paolo Macchiarini was charged in 2020 with mistreatment of patients in connection with his research.

Björn Zoëga quits on March 4. Patrik Rossi, currently deputy hospital director, is proposed as acting director. The work has started with recruiting a regular hospital director.

Karolinska was ranked in 2023 by the magazine Newsweek as Europe’s best hospital and the sixth best in the world.
