Hospice recognizes Cowan with June Callwood Award

Chatham-Kent Hospice is recognizing one of its volunteers with this year’s June Callwood Outstanding Achievement Award for Voluntarism.

Kerry Cowan, the local winner, was noted for her generosity with her time, as well as her passion for palliative care.

“Kerry can always be found where there is a need. Whether someone needs a laugh, or a listening ear, Kerry gives of herself in the service of others,” said Melanie Watson, co-ordinator of volunteer services.

“She is a friend and mentor to the team. During the pandemic, she was among the first to return to her role taking extra shifts in order to support the staff team and those receiving care.”

Cowan joined the volunteer advisory committee in 2014 to help with the development of the volunteer program for the hospice, which opened its doors in 2016.

Since then, she continues in her committee role and has been active in supporting the residents and their loved ones, the hospice added, calling her a “welcoming presence to visitors at reception (who) assists with holiday decorating and so much more.”

Cowan said she believes in making each day worth living.

“Volunteering at CK Hospice has given me the opportunity to be part of an amazing team who truly know how to provide end-of-life care the right way,” she said. “It is an honor to be involved with those who are experiencing a very emotional and difficult time.”

The June Callwood Award was established in 1994 to acknowledge and thank outstanding hospice volunteers throughout Ontario.

The award was named in honor of the Chatham-born Callwood, who was a longtime advocate for hospice, a community activist, author and recipient of the Order of Canada.
