Horror movie with mega twist is really funny and still

The hard-hitting horror comedy The Visit is currently streaming again on Amazon Prime. Since I’m pleading for more attention for M. Night Shyamalan’s low-budget hits, there are three reasons for a horror movie night with The Visit today.

3 reasons The Visit is a great horror movie

  • First laugh: Shyamalan’s offbeat humor shines through in The Visit
  • Then shock: The found footage horror increases by the minute
  • And a mega twist: Of course we won’t reveal it
  • 1. Laugh first: Shyamalan plays to his greatest strengths in the horror film The Visit

I admit it. M.Night Shyamalan is one of my favorite directors and I would always defend him and his films (except maybe The Happening). Especially The Visit is a real pearl in his filmography, because it allowed him to look for extremely unpopular films back into the hearts of horror fans write.

That’s what it’s about: It all starts out harmless. Siblings Rebecca and Tyler are raised by their single mother to the grandparents sent to Pennsylvania. She herself is going on a cruise. But with grandma and grandpa there is some really weird ruleswhich are becoming increasingly bizarre and awkward.

Shyamalan throws a lot amidst the found footage horror weird humor one that loosens up the film enormously at the beginning. Especially Kathryn Hahn is a highlight as a mother. In the meantime, the actress is certainly known to you as a big Marvel star from WandaVision. From time to time she reports in The Visit about her cruise, on which she is having the time of her life with her new boyfriend.

Shyamalan connects in The Visit its great strengths with weird humour: original camera work, unpleasant horror and pure shock moments.

    2. Then shock: The found footage horror works really well here

The siblings want to capture their long overdue first meeting with their grandparents on video and film the whole day. from theirs funny to terrible shots the film feeds itself. Since the children start to fear their own grandparents at a certain point, they also hide the camera from time to time in order to find answers in the secret recordings.

    The Visit

Despite the FSK-12 rating, The Visit is definitive nothing for weak nerves. The stylistic device found footage builds up an incredibly uncomfortable closeness to the characters and their fears and idiosyncrasies. Jump scares are twice as frightening and the unpleasant mood increases from scene to scene until we ask ourselves: What the hell going on here?

    3. And a mega twist that will make you laugh every time

It wouldn’t be an M. Night Shyamalan movie if there wasn’t a mega twist. To date, the filmmaker has failed in only one of his original films, with a Twist Fest to end and that was The Girl Out of the Water. A film whose script makes a snag every minute.

And are you Shyamalan skeptics because he disappointed you with The Happening or The Legend of Aang: Give The Visit a chance! Here he finally returned to his horror roots in 2015.
