Started in October last year The Exorcist: Confession the sixth representative of the popular horror franchise in the cinema and left fans and the press largely disappointed. After a mediocre box office take of around $137 million and largely devastating reviews, director David Gordon Green left the franchise at the beginning of the year – leaving the fate of the two other planned films uncertain.

Now a real genre luminary is said to have been found as a replacement. Because Mike Flanagan, which recently impressed Netflix with films like The Haunting of Hill House and The Fall Of The House Of Usher, is supposed to save The Exorcist franchise for Blumhouse and Universal. This emerges from a new report from Deadline.

Blumhouse and Universal were able to acquire the rights to the popular horror franchise in 2021 for an impressive amount $400 million Purchase from Morgan Creek. The deal would result in three films. The Exorcist: Confession reached us in cinemas in 2023 as the start of the trilogy.

As Deadline reports, it is currently unclear whether Mike Flanagan will only direct the second part or the third film in the planned trilogy. Flanagan’s involvement has not yet been officially confirmed by Blumhouse and Universal.

When will Mike Flanagan’s next Exorcist be released?

The Exorcist: Confession follows on directly from the horror classic The Exorcist by William Friedkin, who started the horror franchise in 1973. The Exorcist: Deceiver, which Flanagan is expected to direct, will follow on from its predecessor, Confession. The cinema release is currently still for the April 17, 2025 planned.
