On TV: Horror makers produced Halloween for incredibly little money
Halloween, 1978. Michael Myers (Nick Castle/Tony Moran), locked in a mental hospital exactly 15 years earlier for the brutal murder of his sister, breaks free and returns to his hometown of Haddonfield for another bloody night. There his eye immediately falls on the young babysitter Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis). And a grisly series of murders unfolds.
Horror legend John Carpenter produced Halloween for a staggering $300,000 (via The Numbers). By comparison, that’s one-thousandth the production budget of today’s blockbusters like Avengers 3: Infinity War, which cost $300 million according to The Numbers. 45 years later, the horror film’s quality and success have justified 12 sequels. The most recent part, Halloween Ends, was not released in cinemas until 2022.
