Hong Kong will introduce a new security law in 2024, the country’s Chief Minister John Lee announced.

The announcement comes four years after China introduced a security law in Hong Kong, which is partially self-governing from China. This is in response to the large protests when hundreds of thousands of residents demonstrated for more autonomy and freedom from the Chinese mainland.

The law means that all talk of secession and what the authorities consider to be forms of rebellion, separatism or collaboration with foreign powers can be punished with up to life imprisonment.

John Lee is the former head of security in Hong Kong and was the driving force behind the implementation of the first security law. In 2022, he was appointed political leader of the special administrative region.
