(Finance) – Hong Kong has announced its intention to present a complaint to the World Commerce Organization (WTO) against the duties of 10% imposed by Donald Trump on all imports from China and the former British colony.
The decision, which follows a similar initiative of Beijing, aims to activate the WTO dispute resolution mechanism against those that the Hong Kong government defines “unreasonable measures “of the United States. A government spokesman said that the rates are “inconsistent with the rules of the WTO” And they ignore the status of the city as a separate customs territory, status maintained even after returning under Chinese sovereignty in 1997.
According to the secretary of the Hong Kong trade, Algernon Yau, in 2023 the exports of the city to the United States reached the 780 million dollars, equal to $ 0.1% of total exports. Local authorities reiterate that, despite being an integral part of China from a political point of view, Hong Kong remains an autonomous entity in international trade.
