Honduras severed diplomatic relations with Taiwan

Taiwan announced that its ambassador to Honduras has returned to Taiwan and that the country’s embassy in Honduras will be closed.

The Central American government of Honduras announced on Saturday that it had severed diplomatic relations with Taiwan.

In mid-March, the president of Honduras Xiomara Castro announced that Honduras intends to establish diplomatic relations with China.

The shift in relations between China and Honduras came weeks after Honduras announced it was negotiating with China to build a hydroelectric dam.

China considers Taiwan to be part of its territory and has assured that it will keep it under its control by force if necessary.

Taiwan announced that its ambassador to Honduras has returned to Taiwan and that the country’s embassy in Honduras will be closed.

Before breaking diplomatic relations, Honduras was one of the 14 countries that have officially recognized Taiwan’s independence.

China adheres to the so-called one-China principle, according to which no country can maintain diplomatic relations with both China and Taiwan.
