“Homoerotic” Jesus sparks protests in Seville

The religious society Consejo de Hermandades commissioned the painting from the artist Salustiano García Cruz, who explained to local media that he painted the resurrected Jesus after his own son, Horacio. García also emphasizes that he wanted to focus on the light of the Easter holiday – the resurrection – and at the same time be true to his own style.

– Anyone who sees something dirty in the picture is only projecting their own inner dirt onto the picture, says García to British The Times.

The protest is organized by an organization which calls itself the Spanish Foundation of Christian Lawyers and which demands both that the painting be removed and that the president of the client organization resign.

A Spanish LGBTQI group defends the artist and writes on X that the protests are a sign that “homophobia is spreading in Spain”.
