Home care employee was threatened with a rifle by users

The union is raging – has introduced a protective stop • The assistant nurse: “Unacceptable”

On Monday, an employee in home care in the municipality of Norrköping had a gun pointed at her when she visited two elderly users in a residence, reports The municipal worker.

The person holding the weapon allegedly claimed that the rifle was unsecured.

The assistant nurse has been on sick leave, but during the week her colleagues have continued to go to the homes of the care recipients. According to the managers, it would be enough to deploy double staffing, i.e. that the staff go there two by two.

The assistant nurse: “Totally unacceptable”

A nurse with whom Kommunalarbetaren has spoken says that the decision has made many employees feel anxious and afraid.

– It is completely unacceptable that you send our staff there when there is a clear threat picture. You can’t expose someone to that risk, in that case you should have first made sure that the weapon is gone, the person told the newspaper.

Now the union rages against the decision, and on Thursday they introduced a protective stop. This means that all care recipients’ homework ends.

The union: Can make the situation worse

Niklas Granath, who is the section chairman of Kommunal i Norrköping, believes that the municipality failed in its work environment responsibility.

– Of course, the staff cannot go there when someone has threatened them with a rifle, he says and believes that sending more employees there risks worsening the situation.

Anette Asplund, area manager of the home service in Norrköping municipality, writes in a message to the Kommunalarbetaren that the decision to stop protection was correct. The care of the user has been handled in “a different way than at home”, she writes.

The municipality has also reported the incident to the police.
