At Christmas time, some invest a little extra in home-baked goods – but it costs more than before. The prices of common baking ingredients have risen sharply over the past five years, according to statistics from Statistics Sweden.

These goods have increased the most in price
Common ingredients such as butter, flour and sugar have risen in price more than the average for food. For example, the price of sugar has increased by 73 percent since 2019, and the price of butter has increased by 40 percent during the same period.

It is not just baking ingredients that have become more expensive – Christmas food has also been affected by the price increases, albeit to a lesser extent. The price of eggs stands out among the classic ingredients of Christmas, with an increase of 50 percent in the last five years, even chocolate has become 54 percent more expensive since 2019 and a whopping 22 percent more expensive in the last year alone.

Despite rising prices, there are some glimmers of light. Some products, such as oranges, have become cheaper in the last year. In addition, certain Christmas table classics, such as herring and grilled salmon, are often reduced in price before Christmas to attract customers.
