Growing up in the public eye is never easy. That knows Kieran Culkin just like his famous series character Roman Roy from Succession. The Kevin – Home Alone star developed a sometimes perfidious sense of humor: For example, he gave Mark Ruffalo a real joint, which the MCU actor smoked in front of the assembled audience.
Kieran Culkin apologized to Mark Ruffalo, but he responded in a relaxed manner
As Culkin recently revealed in an interview with the Guardian, he wanted to play a prank on his fellow actors in the play The Moment When: For one scene, several actors smoked a fake joint on stage. Culkin did have one of the props as a joke, though replaced with a genuine copy containing marijuana.
One evening, Culkin said, he smelled the drug from his place backstage. He crept to the edge of the stage and watched as Mark Ruffalo and the entire rest of the cast smoked the joint, which they thought was a dummy. It was a performance with an invited press.
“I was 17 and stupid“, explains the Hollywood star. There were no incidents, but during the break he had to answer to his colleagues: “I was like, ‘I thought it was a good prank. I’m stupid. I’m so sorry’ but they loved it. Mark said: ‘I haven’t smoked weed in ten years. The second half [der Vorstellung] will be really fun.’”
Theater veteran Phyllis Newman even thanked Culkin and said she hasn’t smoked marijuana since the 1960s. Only the stage manager didn’t want to laugh at Culkin’s prank: “Ruin your life in your own time!“, she apparently snapped at him.
As he explains to the Guardian, Culkin himself hasn’t smoked weed for over 20 years. Mark Ruffalo probably shouldn’t find out.
