History’s first SM in e-sports – zero women participated

In May, the Swedish e-Sports Federation was elected to the National Sports Confederation, which means that e-Sports is now classified as an official sport in Sweden.

During Saturday, the first SM competition of all time for e-sports was thus organised.

– That this is happening… I am so incredibly happy, says Chris Jonasson, general secretary of the Swedish e-sports association.

On site in Älmhult, where the first Swedish championship in e-sports took place, the gender distribution was clear among the competitors: 26 men and zero women.

– It’s boring. At a young age we see more equal playing but when it comes to the older ages, and above all more communicative games, the women slip out. There, the toxic internet culture is a contradiction at the moment, says Chris Jonasson.

The contestants participated in three branches: Counter Strike 2, Dota 2 and Rocket League. In the first-mentioned branch, Alliance claimed the victory after a 2–0 victory against Kappa Bar.

– It is special to be the first, says a satisfied Robin “Robiin” Sjögren after the gold.
