Muhammad Ali vs. Joe Frazier, Anthony Joshua vs. Andy Ruiz Jr., Lennox Lewis vs. Evander Holyfield, Bernard Hopkins vs. Felix Trinidad …
Numerous memorable boxing matches have been seen at New York’s legendary sports sanctuary, Madison Square Garden, the most famous of which is probably the encounter between Ali and Frazier in 1971.
In the “Match of the Century,” two unbeaten heavyweight world champions battled for the World Heavyweight Championship, as Ali had lost his own in 1967 after refusing to take part in the Vietnam War.
Since then, the duo have met twice more, one of which was also visited at MSG, three years later.
On the night before Sunday, the list grew by one match where the women met for the first time.
An Irishman who won the World Championship belt in the lightweight series Katie Taylor and Puerto Rican Amanda Serrano were for the first time in the legendary arena as the main contenders for the boxing event.
The sold-out event, dubbed the biggest match of all time in women’s professional boxing, was witnessed by more than 19,000 pairs of eyes.
– I’m grateful to be in this position and sell out Madison Square Garden. When you think of Madison Square Garden, Muhammad Ali vs. Joe Frazier comes to mind, but the closest to this is Katie Taylor vs. Amanda Serrano, Taylor declared after the match.
Taylor retained her lightweight boxing World Championship belt as she defeated a Puerto Rican with a scattered verdict Amanda Serranon.
Feather series champion Serrano started the match more aggressively. He rode Taylor’s ropes and managed to beat the Irish in the fifth installment. However, Taylor recovered and managed to continue the match.
Especially the last installment was a fierce battle. Serrano hit hard on Taylor, offering strong counterattacks. The scores eventually went in Taylor’s favor 96-93, 94-96, 97-93.
Taylor herself comments that she is ready for a rematch.
– Indeed! We need to take this again.
Taylor’s winning balance is now 21-0. Finns are familiar with Taylor from two encounters.
At the 2016 Rio Olympics Mira Potkonen dropped Taylor in the quarterfinals. Taylor became a professional at the end of the same year.
