The USA crushed Switzerland 9–1 in the Women’s Ice Hockey World Championship. The match also saw a record-breaking opening goal.

The Women’s Ice Hockey World Cup in Brampton, Canada has so far proceeded in a familiar order: in Group A, the USA and Canada have started the World Cup tournament with goal celebrations.

The USA defeated Japan 7–1 in the opening match, and Canada beat Switzerland more moderately with a score of 4–0.

On Friday, the USA also set new records when the team faced Switzerland and left the rink with a 9–1 victory.

USA got off to a flying start in the match when Abbey Murphy stole the puck right after the kickoff and raced to the goal to give the USA the lead just seven seconds into the game.

It is also the women’s World Cup record for the fastest goal. The previous record, 13 seconds, is from the 1994 Games.

– I was just doing my job. But it’s cool. It was a good start to the match for us, Murphy recently commented in an interview with the IIHF.

The USA was superior in the match and took the shots 54–13. Saskia Maurer saved a whopping 45 times in Switzerland’s goal.

The power women of the USA are shaking Abby Roque (1+3), Abby Murphy (1+2) and Cayla Barnes (1+2). Caroline Harvey scored two goals.

Playing in Group A, the USA will next face the Czech Republic and Switzerland will face Japan.

The USA and Canada will meet early on Tuesday morning Finnish time. Canada is the reigning world champion, having defeated the USA 2-1 in last fall’s final.

Finland is currently playing in the B level group match against Germany. Urheilu follows the games in this article.
