Historically heavy downpours claim victims in China and Slovenia

Record heavy rains and water masses have claimed victims in several places in the world over the weekend. China has had heavy downpours and Beijing says last month’s natural disasters caused 147 deaths or disappearances. At least 14 people have been confirmed dead in China’s northeastern Jilin province.

The rainfall is the most severe since measurements began 140 years ago.

Slovenian downpour for half a billion

Even in Slovenia, people are talking about historically serious weather phenomena. Vikica Jericek is one of those affected:

During Thursday and Friday, roads and bridges were destroyed by torrential rains and floods. According to the country’s Prime Minister Robert Golob, two-thirds of the country’s surface should be affected. At least three people have been found dead as a result of the downpour and the cost of the disaster is expected to exceed half a billion euros.

Buildings in Alaska destroyed

In Alaska’s capital Juneau, there was major flooding after a glacial dam burst, it said ABC News. Several people are said to have had to be evacuated and buildings were destroyed in the floods.

Children dead in Georgia

A landslide triggered by heavy rain and exacerbated by erosion in the area claimed 17 lives in Georgia. Several must be children. The rescue operation is in its third day and 18 people are still missing.
