With The Presumptuous Man, Sky has secured a current historical drama from 2023. The German film was directed by Lars Kraume and deals with it a dark chapter in history, which should not be forgotten again. The director has proven through films like The Silent Classroom that he has a knack for historical films and dramas. The historical drama takes place, among other places, in Berlin at the end of the 19th century. Leonard Scheicher takes on the role of Alexander Hoffmann, who wants to do his doctorate in anthropology. He meets translator Kezia Kambazembi, played by Girley Jazama. Through their encounter he questions the racial theory that was widespread at the time.

But later, in 1905, war breaks out in the German colony of German Southwest Africa, now known as Namibia. The Herero and Nama rebel against their oppressors, which is punishable by genocide. Under the protection of the Kaiser’s army, Alexander is supposed to collect art objects from the Herero and Nama in the midst of the unrest and send the remaining skeletons to his professor, played by Peter Simonischek.
But during his stay he witnesses the atrocities that of the German soldiers on the local population be committed. These scenes left a lasting impression on him, which is why he increasingly crosses moral boundaries over time.
The Measured Man was nominated for the German Film Prize 2023
The historical drama was released together with Nothing New on the West and The Ordinaries in the “Best Production Design” category for the German Film Prize 2023 nominated. Lars Kraume’s film didn’t win in this category, but The Presumptuous Man was well received.

The historical drama achieved a rating of 7.1 out of 10 stars on IMDb, and 6.3 out of 10 points among the movie pilots. The film is in your opinion well made and highly recommendedhowever, a journey into the heart of darkness and therefore not easily digestible fare.
