Historic verdict on the involvement of children in crime

A man in his 20s is sentenced for having involved his underage younger brother in crime, announces the Södertörn District Court.

The sentence is the first concerning the new law on the involvement of minors in crime.

The penalty will be a suspended sentence and 50 daily fines of SEK 50, reports Aftonbladet.

The man was also charged with damage, causing bodily harm and assault in a court case. According to the lawsuit, the background is a series of events in July when the man smashed goods in a store in southern Stockholm and on several occasions is said to have threatened and harassed the store staff.

When the staff reported the man to the police, he sent his underage brother there with a phone through which he himself threatened to blow up the store if the police report was not withdrawn.

The man, previously convicted of assault and unlawful threats, was arrested the same day and later remanded in custody. The prosecutor had asked for a year in prison. The man has consistently denied any wrongdoing.

The crime involving a minor in crime was introduced into the criminal code on July 1 and means that anyone who hires, pays, instructs, hands over something or otherwise involves a person under the age of 18 in criminal activity can be sentenced to prison for up to four years.
