Jan himself did not want to go to such a drug hostel: he wanted to get rid of his addiction. He was denied access to rehab clinics and had waiting periods of two years. “That’s why I deliberately started committing very stupid thefts, so that I would be caught. I managed to kick the habit in prison. I contacted Straatnieuws, where they were working on a commuting project and that’s how I knew after four years to get out of homelessness. I have had relapses before, but I haven’t used since 2007.”
