Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said in a statement that he went shopping for his sister’s birthday party with the mother of the 5-year-old boy and his 8-year-old sister in Houston, Texas. Gonzalez stated that when the mother returned home, she thought that both children got out of the car on their own, and entered the house to prepare for the party.

However, Gonzalez said that the 5-year-old boy did not get out of the car. After 2-3 hours, the mother realized that the child was not there, and started looking for her, and when she went to the car, she found her son with the seat belt on and motionless.
Harris police officials also stated that the mother called the emergency help line and said that the child died at the scene.
Authorities said the mother said that her son was able to get out of the “child car seat” on his own, but that he might not have gotten used to it because the car in question was rented.
Authorities said that an investigation was launched into the incident.
