For a long time it seemed as if Henry Cavill had found an iconic role in The Witcher that would accompany him for many years to come. In October, however, he officially announced his exit. The third season of The Witcher, due out on Netflix in summer 2023, will mark Cavill’s final adventure on the continent.
Before Liam Hemsworth takes on the role of the witcher, we’ll see Cavill again for eight episodes as Geralt of Rivia. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich promises one proper farewell: “Henry brought so much to the series and we want to recognize that appropriately.”

It’s not often that the leading actor is changed in the middle of an established series. In the case of The Witcher, the story apparently could still come to one brought to a conclusive end will. Hissrich explains:
Geralt’s big decision is to give up his neutrality. He does everything he has to do to get to Ciri. To me it’s the most heroic goodbye we could have had, even though it wasn’t written that way. When we return to him in Season 4, Geralt has a new mission in mind. He’s a different Geralt – not the Geralt we’re expecting.

The plot of the 3rd season of The Witcher is strongly based on Time of Contempt, the fourth part of the underlying novel by Andrzej Sapkowskis. According to Hissrich, The Witcher series has never been so behind on its source material.
Of course, we can’t film every side, but Time of Contempt gave us plenty of action-packed events, storylines, key character moments, and the big one Revealing a villain given. There are a lot of things where we really oriented ourselves very closely to the books.
