Forecast wet weather held off as a large group of participants gathered for the eighth annual walk at Mud Creek Trail, behind John McGregor secondary school, Sunday.

After the opening ceremonies, the Branch 642 Royal Canadian Legion Pipe Band led the group down the initial stretch.

But even if people weren’t taking part on event day, they were invited to walk the route at their convenience last week.

More than 500 people registered, said Jodi Maroney, the hospice foundation’s executive director, who was thrilled by the response.

“Our goal this year was $140,000 and we know that we’ve hit that already,” she said. “We’re still tallying, because we’re still collecting pledges.”

Registration was free and participants could buy a commemorative T-shirt, tie-dye sunglasses or keepsake memorial signs with the name and picture of a passed loved one.

Families also could enjoy pre-hike entertainment, including live music, lawn games and children’s activities.

The hike was presented by title sponsor Battery Boy and supported by other local businesses. About 50 volunteers, including many high schoolers, helped out.

Since 2017, the hike has raised more than $800,000 for end-of-life care.

The 10-bed hospice, officially opened in 2016, has served more than 1,350 local families to date. This includes care coordination and grievance and bereavement support.

“Some families have been here more than once,” Maroney said. “So, I think people have a true appreciation for the services that we offer.

“We want to educate people and let them know that if they need us, we’re here for them.”
