Highway 402 remained closed Christmas morning

Winter storm prompts Chatham Kent to declare state of emergency

Highway 402 remained closed Christmas morning but the Sarnia area was no longer under a weather advisory, according to Environment and Climate Change Canada.

A severe storm that blew across southern Ontario closed roads and delayed or stranded travelers across southern Ontario.

The OPP’s Western Region posted on Twitter Christmas Eve that Highway 401 had reopened but roads in Huron County remained closed Christmas morning, according to the Ontario 511 website.

Neighboring Chatham-Kent declared a state of emergency and a statement posted Christmas Eve on the municipality’s Facebook page said more than 130 stranded motorists were processed at arenas in Ridgetown and Tilbury.

Chatham-Kent said its plows had cleared half of the municipal roads by Saturday evening.

Ontario Hydro was reporting a small number of customers without electricity Christmas morning in Lambton Shores and southern Lambton County but Bluewater Power’s online power outage map wasn’t reporting any problems for its customers in Sarnia and other locations in Lambton.

The national weather agency’s website was forecasting a low of -13 C Sunday evening and high of -8 C Monday but temperature are expected to climb above freezing later in the week.
