Compared to 2000, when there were 1,116 road deaths, there is an enormous decrease, despite the population growth. The number of car accidents in particular has fallen sharply over the past two decades. “Roads are getting better, cars are safer and perhaps there has been an increased awareness about road safety over the years,” explains Stomphort of Safe Traffic Netherlands.
