Rising food prices are causing more families with children to find it difficult financially, so that children and young people do not go hungry during the Easter break, Luleå Municipality serves school lunches during the Easter break as well. – I think it’s great, for those who can’t afford it or if you just want to eat and hang out with your friends, says student Oscar Isaksson at Hertsöskolan in Luleå. Luleå is one of six municipalities together with Östersund, Krokom, Arvika, Forshaga and Härjedalen that offer school lunches during the Easter break as well. – With the state of the world and the expensive food prices, we want to be able to offer school lunches to all students even during the Easter break, as we know there is a need for it, says Emma Engelmark, chairman of the children’s and education board, Luleå municipality. Child poverty has increased According to a new SIFO survey, child poverty in Sweden has increased as a result of inflation. In order not to have a negative stigma attached to eating school food during the Easter break, the kitchen staff in Luleå have chosen to only serve the students’ favorite food during the Easter break. – All of last week we told the students what we are going to eat this week. To de-dramatize it and get as many people as possible to come here. It will be desired all week. – It is very important that we do this. Because we know that there are students who don’t eat as much on weekends and holidays, says Mats Frank, chef Hertsöskolan. Satisfied students At Hertsöskolan in Luleå on Tuesday, nearly 40 students took the opportunity to eat pancakes for lunch. And the atmosphere among the students was good. – It’s great, if you don’t have lunch at home, you can just go here and eat. No matter how good, says Noah Fennhagen, Hertsöskolan Luleå.
