Since Saturday, the police have detained several people who have expressed opposition to President Saied or tried to mobilize protests against him. Among other things, a former finance minister, two judges and a former diplomat.
Tunisian police on Monday arrested Noureddine Bhiri, a senior member of the main opposition party and a fierce critic of the country’s President Kais Saied.
“The police stormed Bhiri’s house, assaulted his wife and arrested him,” his lawyer, Samir Dilou, told Reuters without giving further details.
Bhiri and other Tunisian politicians are said to be suspected of having planned crimes against the security of the kingdom.
Entrepreneurs such as Noureddine Boutar, director of the independent radio station Mosaique FM, have also been arrested.
Neither the police, the interior ministry nor the prime minister’s office have publicly commented on the arrests or responded to requests for comment on the matter, Reuters reports late Monday.
