High alcohol tax drives smuggling – now it is being raised again

At the turn of the year, the tax on alcohol will be increased. For beer and wine it is a tax increase of around five percent and for spirits it will be around one percent. Alcohol smuggling into Sweden is already extensive today and the tax increase could increase the influx. – Smuggling is extensive because Sweden’s excise duty on alcohol is among the highest in Europe, and in Germany, for example, it is among the lowest, says Oscar Lindvall, deputy head of control, Swedish Customs.
