It can be difficult to determine when your dog is unwell and sometimes you wish they could just talk and tell you if something is wrong. Even though dogs can’t talk, they show in different ways that they feel bad. Therefore, it is important that you recognize these signs.

News24 have talked to Hannahregistered veterinary nurse at Agria’s health information service, who tells you which signs you need to know to know if your dog is healthy or ill.

Check that your dog is healthy

It is important to know what your dog is like when it is healthy, in order to be able to determine if the dog is getting sick. Then there are a few different things to know and check regularly.

– Keep an eye on the dog’s daily routines and normal behaviors such as that the dog is alert and alert, that it urinates and poops, has an appetite and thirst, that you have an eye on what the dog’s normal body temperature is at rest, says Hanna.

You can also check this to see that the dog is healthy:

  • The dog’s temperature should be 38-39 degrees.
  • The gums should be light pink and feel moist.
  • The coat should have a shine.
  • The eyes should be open and look clear.
  • The breath should not smell bad.

    Signs that your dog is sick

    If your dog starts behaving differently from how it usually is, it could be a warning sign. Hanna talks about other behaviors that are deviant.

    – It could be, for example, that it is tired and lethargic, that it eats less or does not want to eat at all, that it drinks less, does not drink at all or drinks more than it usually does, that it does not want to go out for a walk, that it doesn’t pee or poop like it usually does.

    You can also check this to see if something is wrong with your dog:

  • Does the dog have a fever? That is, temperature above 39 degrees.
  • The gums. Does it feel sticky? Has the color changed to paler or white, or darker or red?
  • Does the dog have bad breath?
  • Does the dog breathe differently?

    Common diseases in dogs

    The animal hospital Anicura have listed some common diseases in dogs:

  • Stomach and intestinal diseases. Symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea and decreased appetite.
  • Dental diseases and dental injuries. For example tartar, tooth loss and tooth fracture.
  • Tubers. For example, benign lumps, cysts, fatty lumps and tumors.
  • Skin problems. For example itching, allergy and fungus.
  • Heroes. Can be caused by broken bones, osteoarthritis and cruciate ligament injuries.
