A Lebanese security source tells the news agency Reuters that the likely new Hezbollah leader Hashem Safieddine is “unreachable” after an Israeli attack on Beirut on Friday.

Safieddine (sometimes spelled Safi al-Din) is the cousin of former Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah and is believed to take over his role. According to Israeli media, he was the target of one of the many attacks on Beirut on Friday.

The area Hashem Safieddine is believed to have been in when the attack took place has not yet been able to be searched, reports the BBC, citing Lebanese security sources. The reason is constant attacks on Beirut’s southern suburbs in the last 24 hours.

The Shia Muslim movement Hezbollah has not commented on any information about Safieddine.

Hassan Nasrallah was killed in Israel’s massive bombing raids on Hezbollah strongholds in the Lebanese capital Beirut at the end of September.
